The Gulag Collection

cover

Nikolai Getman survived nearly eight years in the Soviet Gulag to paint from memory the only known visual record of life in Stalin's forced labor camps. This bilingual Russian-English volume presents his incomparable collection of fifty oil paintings—produced in secret over forty years after his release—along with essays by Getman himself and Gulag expert Robert Conquest.

The cover was prepared in QuarkXpress, using one painting and a photograph of the artist. The text and picture layout of the catalog was prepared in QuarkXpress, using Adobe fonts ITC Baskerville, Galliard, Minion, and Optima (both English and Cyrillic). The 4x5 negatives of the paintings—shot by oil-painting photography specialist Bill Hebert in the Grand Rapids Public Museum in Michigan—were scanned in for position only (FPO), and stripped in by the King's Times Printing publishing house in Hong Kong.
