One thing is certain about anything anyone writes. It needs another pair of eyes, and afterward will more than likely be the better for it.

That's where I come in.

One cardinal rule: maintain the author's voice. Fix what's incorrect, obviously. Tend to source citations and other technical issues. Tweak what's not quite right. Pare away the excess. Enhance it. Clarify it. Strengthen it. But (unless it's wildly inappropriate) keep the voice....
