logistics & practical matters
Job Pickup and Delivery
Are you tired of the lag time in hardcopy manuscript deliveries? Is emailing large attachments a frequent source of headaches? This password-protected FTP manuscript exchange service is an alternative to both. If you're already registered, follow the link to continue with your file transfer. If you're not, feel free to write or give me a telephone call at 301.562.6995.
Working Contracts
A polite cyber handshake isn't always enough. Whether you're hiring a freelance editor or writer, or working as one, you want a contract in place. This can be either an informal letter or a complex legal document. What's important is that both parties are protected by a written agreement. My starting point for editorial work is a formal contract written in plain English.
Editing Rates
Two good overviews of industry averages for proofreading, editing, and writing rates are available online, one at the Editorial Freelancers Association and the other at Writersmarket.com. My base rates are in line with these guidelines, but vary depending as much on the work as on the circumstances of the job. I am happy to negotiate a per hour, per page, or flat rate tailored to the specific project or regular assignment.
